FairPlayUSA To Fight Illegal Online Gambling

Article by Ryan McNallen

Many citizens of the United States have been waiting day by day for their government to make a decision as far as the stance when it comes to online poker. Some politicians are all for online poker and see the value and the revenue that can be made from legalizing the game online. Others think that poker does more harm than good in households across the nation.

A newcomer with a very loud voice when it comes to advocating for legalizing online poker is an organization called FairPlayUSA. The group was founded by politicians and interested parties who are now demanding that the United States government reach a decision with definitive writing when it comes to online poker. Online gambling has always been in what most would call a gray area. Some proclaim the passing of the UIGEA was when online gambling became illegal, however it did not specifically state that citizens weren’t allowed to play online. This deterred some from continuing their gaming online because they felt there was a risk involved.

The idea of FairPlayUSA came from Ceasars Entertainment, which is funded by casino giants, Caesars & MGM. The group most recently has had alot of media coverage mainly from poker websites and an unlikely figure, Michael Grimm who was a former FBI agent and current congressman. Michale Grimm released this statement in a press release

“I applaud the efforts of FairPlayUSA for launching its coalition to combat illegal gambling. As a former FBI agent, I fully support the efforts to create a strong regulatory framework for legal online poker and to crack down on illegal sites, many of whom have ties to organized crime.”

Aside from FairPlayUSA many other politicians have written & submitted potential bills to be looked at to legalize online gambling & online poker, within these bills they have highlighted the fact that revenue could see a boost of 40 billion dollars over a matter of time, also that gaming would be regulated and that players would only be allowed to play at the governed sites. Some bills even propose a hefty ,000 fine for those going outside of the sites provided for the players in the United States.

On April 15th 2011, the United States Department of Justice was able to successfully seize three of the top online poker sites along with the player accounts the sites held. Some of the players were actually able to earn a living from playing professional poker, this took away income for families and angered many across the United States. Since the shutdown occurred one of the sites actually lost their gaming license and decided to sell the company to another online poker company. As with most collapses, other sites followed and pulled out of the United States market leaving few choices for poker players when it came to playing online.
