Online gambling should not be prohibited by the government. Many people enjoy playing at an online casino and should be able to do so if they choose. The government can impose taxes on online gambling which would make it legal. The economy could use the boost of revenue that allowing online gambling in the United States would create if it were taxed to be made legal. A small percentage of people do develop gambling habits, but this does not justify making online gambling illegal in the United States. I believe that online gambling should be legal for residents of the United States and people who live in the United States should be able to gamble online if they choose to do so. Not only is online gambling fun and a way for people to win a little or a lot of money, it is also a good form of entertainment. If someone is playing responsibly when gambling online they can spend less or about the same as they would for a night out on the town and if they win they can cash out with more than they started with. Casinos are very popular and entertaining, but usually mean travelling long distances for most people who want to visit. Online casinos are convenient and allow people to visit a casino without even leaving their home. They can log on 24 hours a day 7 days a week and find their favourite casino game to play. There are legal online lottery sites that allow people to do the same things that make online gambling at casinos illegal. It’s basically a double standard, and one that is not popular among those who enjoy visiting an online casino to play their favourite online casino games. There is a lot of potential for the government to make money from legalizing online gambling. As stated by the Interactive Gaming Council, “an estimated 1,800 gaming web sites with a projected gross income of .3 billion for 2003….” is this not enough money for the government? This is possible if the online casinos are taxed the same way that the brick and mortar casinos are taxed. There is not much difference applying taxes to the online casinos than there is to controlling and taxing online lottery sites. And since online lottery sites already exist legal online gambling should also be possible.
